Participatory processes are NICE - collaboration for circular water

Participatory processes can be a powerful tool in creating long lasting change - especially when used in the implementation of nature based solutions. A group training session, led by NICE partner LISODE, a French organisation specialising in cooperative training, created an opportunity for NICE Cities Urbal Real Labs to learn how to engage stakeholders.

The workshop allowed the partners from the Urban Real Labs to share valuable experiences and knowledge from nature-based solutions implementation for sustainable water management; green walls; vegetable rooftops, constructed wetlands and rain gardens. In each group, participants explored elements to consider when implementing the nature-based solutions in the context of Urban Real Labs. In order to have a truly participatory process there is a need to ensure the innovation is desirable for different stakeholders. Scoping out what stakeholders think are the issues when it comes to urban water is crucial to ensure the solutions provided match expectations.

Moving forward, the NICE Urban Real Labs will build on lessons learned from existing nature-based solutions to ensure that local stakeholders, such as municipalities and residents are informed and feel empowered to contribute to their success, resulting in continuity of successful solutions in future.
